Life Against Death

This is Sarah. I decided to do this post of Norman O'Brown's Life Against Death because it was probably one of the most confusing works I have ever read. I thought my head was going to explode after reading the first two pages of chapter 14. I did not know we were suppose to know what diabolism and eschatology were.  Although it was challenging, I think I understood the general themes.
I thought it was comical how he made a parallel between the privy and the devil. The devil could be compared to all of the "shit" in society that one is not suppose to do. He then continues to state that the devil represents repressive thoughts. There was one quote that caught my attention:
"The world is the devil and the devil is the world" : p.212
I thought that this quote was brilliant. It encompasses all the ideals about repression and the protestant ethic. O'Brown is conveying that the "devil" is a part of everyone. Each person possesses their own pleasures and desires that they repress.
O'Brown then concluded with his views on protestantism. He states, "Protestantism then representsa new stage in human history, a fuller return of the repressed." p.232

love it!
