Daniel Bergner book, The Other Side of Desire: Four Journeys Into the Far Realms of Lust and Longing, introduces the reader to four individual with unconventional and sometime uncontrollable desires. As readers we are introduced to a devoted husband with a foot fetish, a fashion maven who’s a sadist, a man who becomes sexually attracted to his young stepdaughter and an advertising executive who lusts after amputees. The desires of each individual are an unconventional approach to sex that is sometimes not understood or accepted in mainstream culture. However, do these desires may not be as uncommon as one may expect.
An interesting fact that I feel I should note is based on Roy, the man who becomes sexually attracted to his preteen stepdaughter. To me Roy automatically sounds like a creepy pedophile, but is Roy a pedophile or is his desire common among many man. Roy was assess for his preference in women and it was discovered that he was attracted to adult women but was slightly more attracted to adolescent girls. This finding was actually the realization of the ordinary male desire. Thus, Roy is not a pedophile, because the difference between Pedophile and the ordinary man is that the ordinary man does not act on the desire.
