In class we have discussed the pleasure of coffee and the way in which companies, like Starbucks, have consumer-ized the pleasure of coffee drinking. Starbucks has given people the ability to enjoy coffee in a recyclable cup that is easy to transport from café, to car, to train, to work and beyond. Coffee is no longer a beverage sipped slowly over time at a coffee shop talking about the days even with friends but it is now one part of the morning routine from millions of people.
I currently work at a Starbuck on campus and rarely get pleasure from my job or the act of drinking coffee but I am learning loads about coffee and those people who decide to grab a cup of Joe from the local Starbucks. In class we have discussed the pleasure aspect of coffee however I think it is interesting to note that I very rarely notice a happy face at my counter. Smiles are rare but the look of pure terror/anxiety is usually written all over the faces of the students. It is also interesting that the morning is the slowest time of the day but students are always asking what drink has the most caffeine or which drink will give them a buzz. I notice that the students have lost the joy of drinking coffee and use it only for the instant jolt it will give them and the speed at which they are able to consume the drink.
At my job it is rare to see a customer take a sit and enjoy their coffee, usually customers have left the counter before I can say, “Have a nice Day.” There for has coffee lost it’s pleasure aspect and is consumed today as part of the daily routine without a though of the joy the consumption has provided. At my Starbucks with my customers I would say yes but I do not believe the trend has imposed itself 100% in the society. I believe this because of the fact that coffee shops do exist and they still offer mugs for onsite consumption and the fact that people are still sipping coffee on occasion (after dinner coffee).
