This is Sarah. In class yesterday we watched the conclusion of the film The White Ribbon. Everything seemed to unfold in the second half of the movie and all the character's true colors were revealed. The village doctor proved to be a meniacle pervert. He was sexually molesting his daughter and kept it a secret from all others outside his family.
The father characters in this movie could be compared to the devil character described by Norman O'Brown. According to Freud, the father was the devil's substitute. The father's role was to instill fear in the children. The father controlled the family and made all of the children's and wife's decisions.
One scene that I found significant was the confirmation scene. In the village, when a child achieves confirmation, their white ribbons are removed. This is a sign of maturity and approval to act on their adult impulses. One character, Martin, was forced to sleep with white ribbons constricting his arms from moving. After he had his confirmation, the ribbons were removed.
It is revealed in the conclusion of the movie that the children of the village played a huge role in the beatings of Sigi. In my opinion, the children took out all of their aggression that endured from their parents on Sigi. They were forced to repress all their desires in life and constantly seek their parent's approval. All of the children in the village had no defense against when aruging with their parents. They beleived that the only person that would not be strong enough to fight back was Sigi. I enjoyed this film a lot and am looking foward to watching more films in class.
