To pay or not to pay

This is Sarah. I found the article posted by Dr. Nerio so interesting, I decided to write a post on it. The article discusses how New York City swingers clubs have suffered economically during the recession. This downfall in attendance can be explained by people's unwillingness to pay for sex during these hard times. One person bluntly put, "If you want to get laid, you can stay home and get laid for free." The Carousel Couples Club in Midtown Manhattan has had a 30-40% drop in event attendance this past year alone. One Leg Up founder Palagia said she had 2,000 members in 2007, but that number fell enough that she was forced to lower her semi-annual membership fees from about $900 a year to $550 a year this September.

It is understandable why people are not willing to pay such an exorbitant amount of money for a membership. The recession has caused people to return to the "simple life". Pleasures are being cut out because people simply cannot afford them. Americans are forced to repress their pleasures in times of desparation. Leaving a swingers club can be viewed as a form of cutting back. Part of the pleasure is the fantasy of being sexual with a large group of people. Now this is solely just a fantasy for many who desire it. I predict that the memberships will continue to drop and more and more people will make the choice to stay home and "get laid for free."
