The Return of the Repressed

Ewen and Ewen continued

By Melissa

The female is seen as sexual while the male is seen as sexual and something more. Then the idea arises that everyone might be bisexual in one way or another. People are either feminine which implies that they have no morals and they are mindless or they are masculine which implies that they are moral beings and capable of transcendent thought. Some thinkers thought of bisexuality as a fleeting state within people while Freud thought it was a present, powerful force present within everyone.

Freud then stated that people who limit themselves to only heterosexual or homosexual unions are repressing themselves. He then scared people with his acknowledgement of children as sexual beings. Some people dismissed homosexuals as being degenerates or diseased but Carpenter, a great thinker of the time, saw them as a highly capable population that has been forced to live underneath the surface of society's walls. If people could come to terms with the bisexuality that is within them, than a utopian type of society can start to form.

Women have been calling for equality for a long time and would not settle for anything less. They began to reject was was distinctly feminine about them, cutting their hair into bobs and wearing androgynous clothing. The women of the 1920s attacked the traditional stereotype of what it meant to be a female and thus attacked the foundation of the universe as they knew it. The women's rights campaign has almost earned us total equality to men. Women today owe it to the women who rebelled before us in the suffrage movement for the freedom of luxury which we enjoy today.
