Judgmental Miss Kitty

Susie Bright critics Catharine MacKinnon’s Only Words in her article “The Prime of Miss Kitty MacKinnon.” MacKinnon is a premier feminist activist, but readers slowly learn the reality behind her writings. Bright reveals the scandalous implications that Miss Kitty makes in her prose.

One of the statements that Miss Kitty makes that was really striking dealt with porn actresses. She states, “Actresses are all overwhelmingly…poor desperate homeless pimped women who are sexually abused as children.” As a woman that proclaims to be an activist for females, she is making such a ridiculous statement. Miss Kitty is taking the viewpoint of an observer, and she is not basing her beliefs based on circumstances of actual porn actresses.

Despite being a feminist, MacKinnon negatively portrays porn actresses and characterizes them under a specific category. Human beings often have the tendency to categorize their peers based on their observations. As observers, we cannot fully understand the emotions, situations, and problems that an individual must face. Should we really presume that all porn actresses were sexually abused as children? Do all sexually abused children seek professions as porn actresses? In psychology, one important dogma states that correlation does not mean causation.  Should not the same concept apply when dealing with sexually abused children and porn actresses?
