If these Walls Could Talk 2

By Hayley Turner

The movie If these Walls Could Talk 2 follows three different lesbians from three different generations. The first story takes place in 1961 and tells the story of Edith Tree a women who recently lost her longtime companion Abigail. The second story takes place in 1972 and tells the story of Linda who falls in love with Amy, a lesbian who dresses more masculine that feminine. The last story takes place in 2000 and tells the story of Fran and Kal, a lesbian couple that want to become parents. The key theme that I took from the three stories is the change in acceptance and how that affects the women and their decisions.

In 1961, Edith and Abigail kept their love hidden due to lack of support for alternative relationships. The lack of openness for their life style ends up destroying Edith because after Abigail’s death she no longer has the rights to the life, house and possessions the couple had collected over the years. Edith was also unable to know of Abigail’s death since she was not a relative and merely a good friend to those outside of the relationship.

In 1972, the women in the story are much more open about their life style. They are all openly gay but due to their openness they are met with resistance by those in power (The University System). An interesting part of this story is the diversity of lesbians portrayed; there is the college lesbians and the lesbians seen in the gay bar; the two types of lesbians, although all lesbians, show hatred towards the other group. This hatred is shown in the bar scene as well as in the house when Linda invited Amy over and Linda’s friend attempt to change Amy to fit into their lesbian type.

In 2000, there is a different type of challenge shown, the women are shown as a happy couple and are in a society they feel accepts them. They openly talk about their life style and are very open. The challenge they face is the ability to conceive a child. They portray the challenges that lesbian couple can face because they can’t accidentally make a baby, they are required to plan it and decide upon it. Their story is one of accepting what one can’t do and accepting the help other can provide and coming to terms with the two.

I highly suggest others to watch this movie because I think it does a great job showing the changes that have taken place for gay rights and freedom.
